DESIGN BUILD COMPETITION ONLINE 2020

Did you miss this year's Design Build Competition Online Awards Ceremony and Industry Lunch? Watch below!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the world this year, the Design Build Competition moved online! We knew we wouldn't be able to gather together to build Tiny Homes, Sheds, and Storage Structures in person this spring, but we had a great opportunity for industry and students to meet in the virtual classroom. We tasked students with the competition requirements below and turned our in person competition completely virtual...in one week! This Competition was free to all high school students.

Student Registration - During registration, students were asked if they had completed OSHA 10 Training. If they select no, they would receive a follow-up email with instructions on how to complete their OSHA 10 Training online for free through CareerSafe.
Items 2 through 7 required students to submit their items at one time.
Picture
Proof of OSHA 10 Training - Students were asked to upload a photo/copy of either their OSHA 10 Training card or certificate if they had already completed the training, or a copy of their certificate of completion if they completed it online through this competition.
Picture
Resume Submission - Students were asked to submit a Resume. If they didn't have one, we invited them to participate in a live webinar guiding students on how to make a resume from a high school perspective.

Download Tiny Home Plans from the Online Student Plan Room - Students needed to access the online plan room in order to view the 2020 Design Build Plans for the Cost Estimating Exercise in Part 5. A unique username and password was emailed to students from kcbex@kcbex.com with a link to access the online student plan room. We produced a webinar to demonstrate how to access the online student plan room.

Complete a Cost Estimate from the Plans you Downloaded - Once they had the plans in the Student Plan Room, they needed to complete a cost estimate for the WALL PORTIONS of the structure and upload it as part of their final submission. In order to complete this cost estimate, they needed to summarize the materials needed based upon the plans (again, walls only), then visit www.HomeDepot.com or www.Lowes.com to price those materials online. In submitting their cost estimate, they made sure to let us know which website they priced the materials from. Click here for the Cost Estimate template. They did not need to plan for required overage, but were encouraged to round up to the necessary required materials (for example, if they believed they needed 28 sq. ft. of siding materials but the siding only comes in 4 ft. by 8 ft. product, they would need to round up to one 4 ft. by 8 ft. sheet of siding which provides for 32 sq. ft.).

Honorable Mention Scholarship - While only a cost estimate of the walls was necessary as part of this competition, an Honorable Mention Scholarship was awarded to the student that provided the most accurate cost estimate for the entire structure (flooring, walls, roofing, windows and doors).

A recording of the Cost Estimating webinar we produced is available below.

Physical Model - Students needed to build a physical model of the exterior of the Tiny Home using ONLY materials that could be found in their homes. Materials used might include cardboard, folders, popsicle sticks, branches, styrofoam, books, etc. Creativity is essential and non-traditional building materials were encouraged to be used so that they could abide with Stay at Home requirements. Their model should not have exceeded  2 feet in any direction (length, width, or height), or exceeded one-sixth actual size.
Picture
Video Submission - Students needed to submit up to a 60 second video which stated their name, school, grade level, and then showed their physical model from multiple angles. During their video, we requested they point out which areas of actual construction they would anticipate would be the most challenging. Their video might also include clips of the construction of their physical model.
The Online Awards Ceremony was hosted live on May 7th from 12 noon to 12:45 p.m. on GoToWebinar! The Awards Ceremony was open to all students, families, and industry professionals.
This competition was open to all high school students residing in the United States and was available free of charge thanks to the generosity of our program sponsors and grant funders. For questions on this event, please contact Jordan Blair at jblair@cie.foundation.
Awards Ceremony
First Place was awarded a $2,500 Scholarship. Second Place was awarded a $1,000 Scholarship. Third Place was awarded a $500 Scholarship. Honorable Mention(s) were also be awarded. Judging was completed by CIEF Staff and Industry Professionals.

Live Career Webinars and Job Site Visits
In addition to the competition, students had access to live weekday webinars with industry professionals from the built environment. They were able to ask questions of architects, engineers, project managers, project engineers, corporate vice presidents, owners, and more. They could also participate in live virtual jobsite visits and ask questions about current construction projects. A calendar of all live webinars was posted as they became available on our website and a recorded version was available online at the conclusion of each live session.
