20% by 2020

SRBX Women in Construction (WIC) is a council that was established within the SRBX Government Affairs Committee.

The SRBX WIC council is motivated to educate, connect, develop, inspire and advance women in the construction industry as they build meaningful careers.

Our SRBX WIC council is growing, and we highly encourage energetic SRBX members to join and become even more involved in our regional construction industry.

SRBX continues to celebrate women as a visible component of the construction industry and seeks to  encourage California lawmakers, at all levels of government, to adopt policies that will successfully increase women in apprenticeship programs to 20% by 2020.

While there are more than 1 million women employed in the construction industry, women only comprise approximately 10 percent of the construction workforce. We are changing that!

Women face severe under-representation in construction, with just 8.9 percent share of the total U.S. construction industry alone. Only 1.3 percent of operating engineers and construction equipment ope
rators are women, making these occupations the tenth most male-dominated in the country.

Like many industries who are struggling to close the skilled labor gap, the construction industry has been especially hit hard by the last economic downturn when tens of thousands of construction workers left the state or industry.

Today, for every five (5) construction workers who are preparing for retirement, there is only one (1) to in the pipeline to replace them. SRBX WIC Council supports policies that recognize women as an untapped resource to help close this skilled labor gap so that California can continue to keep pace with infrastructural needs.

SRBX WIC is the sponsor of ACR 182 that helps to better position California to increase women’s participation in high-wage, high-skill nontraditional fields, such as construction, is vital to their economic security.

SRBX WIC has successfully lobbied both the state and regional municipalities to recognize Women in Construction and embrace our goals of reaching 20% by 2020.

The council works collaboratively with many other regional and state groups on areas of mutual interest. Together we are working to schedule several events that seek to advance and empower women in construction and the trades.
